7/7/77: Happy Birthday to Jenny!

The celebration actually started eight days ago, when Em and Dave were in town and we went to an O's-Phillies game. I had called the O's a day before, and gotten Jenny's name - and upcoming age - up on the scoreboard with the other birthdays! She was (probably?) happy that her name was up there, but less than thrilled about her age being displayed, since she still had eight more days of her twenty-eighth year to enjoy.

Little-known fact: Jenny shares a birthday with fashion icon Pierre Cardin! (same day, but back in 1922)

27 Points of Light, or 1 Blazing Inferno?

What can I say, a bit of Easter-weekend inspiration! Either that, or I was just really hungry for brownies, and who has time to place and light 27 individual candles when the brownies beckon? Regardless of the motivation, I have a feeling that a new family birthday-celebrating tradition has been born!

Happy Birthday Matt! Hope you win big this weekend, bro, like I always do (haha! I'm so funny!). Just remember the words of the King: All you need's a strong heart and a nerve of steel...

A Birthday Conspiracy

Jenny and my parents arrived at my office Friday around noon, with my sister Em as a special surprise guest! (Jenny had flown her in from Charleston) We proceeded to the National Zoo - my Mom's idea, she's a panda fanatic - and that evening Jenny and I trekked back to the Charm City for a fantastic birthday dinner at Sascha's. Little did I know then, that the festivities weren't yet over....

Saturday - my parents and Em were going to come out to Baltimore for dinner with us that night; a dual celebration of mine and Em's birthdays (hers is today, happy birthday Em!!!), or so I thought. Jenny claimed that she had to go into the office that afternoon, since she was out all day on Friday. Very plausible; I didn't think twice about it. Nor did I think twice when she claimed early that evening that she left her cell phone at the office; again, very believable, since she's been known to forget or misplace things from time to time. I also wasn't suspicious about Barry & Helen wanting to watch the end of My Cousin Vinnie on TV instead of heading out to eat earlier than planned (everyone was already hungry around 7, reservations were for 8) - after all, they love that movie.

But then again, I didn't have any reason to be suspicious! I had thought that something was going on for the last few weeks, with Jenny on the phone with my mom a few times per week, but when Em showed up I figured hey, that was it. Nope. Most everyone who's reading this knows the rest - I show up at DuClaw in Fells Point, everyone's there, I am genuinely surprised, we drink, eat, mingle; a good time is had by all!

Now for the second round of birthday thank-yous! Thanks again to the whole family - Barry, Helen, and Em for helping out with the planning and the photo album, and Dave, Amy, and Matt for all your love (I know you all would have been there if you could; get well soon Amy!). Thanks to everyone who showed up, especially the LTIers who made the journey from DC - special thanks to Scott for coordinating with Jenny to make sure I didn't inadvertently spoil any plans - and our Patterson Park neighbors for taking time to celebrating with a guy that they don't know too well. Finally, to the wife of the year, Jenny - what can I say, you pulled it off marvelously, babe. It's gonna be tough to top that in another year-and-a-half, when it comes time to celebrate your second 29th birthday....I'm up to the challenge though (mwaahahhah!!).

Thirty, Google Video

Today's the day, the big three-zero. Ze Germans call it dreissig. The Romans would have known it by the letters XXX (how naughty). I'd like to thank my parents for making it all possible, and myself for staying alive for all these decades.

In other news, Google recently launched its video service, and already we have a few winners. For you cat-lovers out there (or even for you alleged cat-haters who secretly love cats, you know who you are), here are cats doing weird and crazy things. And here's an alternate music video of the Electric Six tune Gay Bar featuring everyone's favorite transatlantic couple, George and Tony. No, it's not a homophobic song (at least not that I can tell), it's just plain bizarre - other Electric Six originals include Electric Demons in Love and Vengeance and Fashion. Don't take the song too seriously, but be impressed with the editing of the video.

Busy Weekend

  • Out for Cal's birthday Friday night. Franklins on Route 1 in Hyattsville, very good beers but the decor was too cheerful, in my opinion.
  • Shopping for patio stone, movie Saturday (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, I thought it was great, lots of fun)
  • 7-mile race early Sunday morning. I was pretty happy with my results, 1:01:57 for a pace of 8:51 (don't ask me why the pace they have on the results page is the gun time pace, the net time pace is what really counts). Not bad for me, especially considering how miserable it was that morning (heat, humidity), and that I didn't exactly have the luckiest bib number - 666. On the other hand, it was a very flat course. I'd sure like to move up in my division though, 27/47 is OK but not great.
  • Six Flags America trip w/Jenny, Tammie, Liz, and Jarriel the rest of Sunday. A good time, we hit all the major coasters very quickly; because of how hot and humid it was, we suspected that everyone was at the water park. Later, we visited said water park and it was pretty damn crowded (we didn't stay long). Their Batwing coaster featured a car design that I hadn't seen before, where you're sitting, but completely horizontal with the track. When the cars invert below the track, you're basically hanging from the various restraints. It's a freaky feeling that wasn't all that comfortable at first, but I got used to it after 30 seconds or so. Neat idea, but why isn't it a Superman themed ride? Because it looks and feels like Superman flying more than anything Batman-related.

Clarification, and...Happy Birthday Matt!

A few loyal readers have asked, based on the last entry, if I played gold in SC recently. No, based on my "skill" level I would certainly not be allowed to defile the beautiful South Carolina courses. My dad Barry is a contributor to this blog though, and it is he who is responsible for the last item. What can I say - he found out about my blog, and since he wants to be just like me, he asked to become a contributor. He spends too much time online already looking at photos of old tractors and trying to find tractor parts (aaah, middle-age hobbies!), leaving no time for his own blog.

Meanwhile, it's the 21st of April 2005, and that means that my brother Matt (picture approximately reflects current appearance) turns 26 today. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MATT!!!

Happy Birthday!

To Me! Received an early birthday present last night, courtesy of the mighty Terrapins: MD wins in Durham. AGAIN.

Here's my review of the game, in Terrapin Red, naturally:

What can I say about the game, it was incredible! The Terps overcame the hostile drone-like synchronized cheering of the teamfromDurham's student fans and the biases of the officials to win yet again in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Nik Caner-Medley, playing like a first-team all ACC player right now, absolutely abused Redick in the second half. Abused might not be the right word. Let's just put it this way, it wouldn't have been legal in Texas a few years ago, before the Supreme Court struck down certain state laws. Those two long three-pointers were especially nice, since those are usually Redick's trademark.

I was most impressed by how smart and composed the team was. No dumb fouls, lots of ball movement - which is essential against the
teamfromDurham since they always overplay on defense. And of course, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the excellent officiating. Even Vitale had to admit there were several obviously blown calls. Maryland did get a few back, but the balance still went to the teamfromDurham. I especially enjoyed Randolph's shove-to-the chest clear-out of a Maryland defender before a slam dunk late in the game. Way to stand up to the man, zebras! And once again Shane Battier reaches out from beyond the grave - aka his NBA career - in the form of ridiculous charge calls directly underneath the basket.

My favorite part of the game had to be the long, panning shots of the student drones, um, fans, with about 3 minutes left in the game. They could feel their chances slipping away, and looked so devastated. It was as if someone had taken away their BMWs, or shot their purebred dog. Yes, drones, the terps shot your poodle
(figuratively of course, I LOVE dogs! Even poodles. Well, poodles aren't my favorite, but it's not their fault they look like they do. Anyway, rest assured no poodles or any other dogs were harmed during the writing of this review). Again. Since it's almost an annual occurrence these days, they should be used to it by now, shouldn't they?

I personally think there's also a form of political Karma at work here: Krewsiwooski's Republican fundraising efforts simply aren't healthy for the Chi of his team!

For anyone who's counting, that's two wins in a row against these guys. And there's at least one more match-up this season, in College Park next month, plus the ACC tourney is at MCI center this year. Stay tuned...
